You’ll use this to replenish your Focus Points as you would use the regular Estus Flask to replenish your Health Points.
Kill him and loot the corpse at the base of the fountain for an Ashen Estus Flask. Enemies may try to trick you into appearing harmless but will spring forth at a moment’s notice if they see you.

When he’s gone, go right down the small corridor he was near to find a glowing orb that designates an item - a Soul of a Deserted Corpse. Wait for your opportunity - or knock him off balance with your shield - and strike back. They tend to run at you with a large slash, and sometimes follow up with a short flurry of attacks or one slow overhand swing. Even though he wields a broken sword, he can deal some damage if you let him. Your first enemy awaits you just up the road on the right from your grave - a Hollow. You can find a few later in the game - and even some left by other players. Familiarize yourself with the controls, and be mindful of the red lines in the ground that mark tooltips in this area. Upon the awakening of your character, you’ll find yourself in a tutorial area of sorts, with naught but the gear you were buried with - and a possible Burial Gift.
